October Privacy Tip:  Facebook Two Factor process

Facebook has confirmed that it does use phone numbers that its users provide for security purposes to target them with ads. If you are using the so-called Two-Factor authentication, which allows a vendor to send a code to your phone for you to use before you sign into your online account, you may want to reconsider.

Here’s the statement, attributed to a Facebook spokesperson: “We use the information people provide to offer a better, more personalized experience on Facebook, including ads. We are clear about how we use the information we collect, including the contact information that people upload or add to their own accounts. You can manage and delete the contact information you’ve uploaded at any time.”

If you want to manage this on your Facebook account here’s how to do it.

  • To turn on or manage two-factor authentication:
  • Scroll to the bottom of any page and click Settings & Privacy > Security and Login.
  • Scroll down and click Use two-factor authentication.
  • Click Set Up.
